SPOTY
Some bloke just got a trophy for being an arse-bandit, right?

It's ALL about diversity this year.

I heard his fellow rowers on TV once, say that he is a complete bastard, which is what made him so uncompromising and successful.

May I just add that I had the misfortune once to meet Steve Redgrave.

He is an absolute tosser. He brags endlessly about being 'the greatest Olympian ever' and gets defensive if anyone tries to mention other great athletes.

He's managed to convince himself that he is the greatest athlete ever born, which he isn't.

What a complete cock.

Murray has every chance to win this again next year, the way he is heading. He knows he only has a few years left and is totally on it.

Shame he isn't a right-back who has always wanted to live in Canary Wharf, really.

Seems a bit pointless for us to catty on squabbling about something we mostly agree on.

For those in doubt, I'm not saying that Murray is rubbish, just that to claim he is the greatest ever British sportsman is nonsense. I could name (at least) three cyclists, a sailor and two rowers above him without even thinking, plus Thompson and Farah from athletics. And that's just Olympic sports.

From football I'd add the two Bobbies and George Best, from cricket Ian Botham and from rugby Gareth Edwards, Jonathan Davies (two codes), Jason Robinson (two codes) and Ellery Hanley. From darts, Phil 'the Perve' Taylor, from snooker Steven Hendrie, from bowls David Bryant.

Plus I might suggest Rebecca Romero, World Champion and Olympic silver medalist in rowing and then multiple World and Olympic Champion in cycling.

And obviously C.B. Fry. When did Andy Murray get offered the throne of Albania, for fuck's sake?

Re: SPOTY
Probably not.
This era of 4 really outstanding players with multiple wins well ahead of the rest is a bit unusual
Often there are two great players like Borg v McEnroe with Connors behind them or sometimes there is one dominant player like Sampras.

Re: SPOTY
Ok, what players would you class as top players that aren't national no1? Considering there are only a couple in the top 16 you'd need to stretch the top definition of top player quite a bit to make any sort of list.

My general point was that the the gap between the top players and the rest is so big that not having no2s there doesn't make much difference to the difficulty of the tournament. It's still gonna be the same small group of players at the end of the tournament.

I'd agree Olympic gold is a fair way behind a major win though.

Re: SPOTY
Off the top of my head there are only 7 active major winners
Murray
Djokovic
Federer
Nadal
Wawrinka
Cilic
Del Potro

Swiss number two is pretty good. Which other country currently has two major winners still active in the men's game?

Roger Federer (the swiss No2) is pretty handy

'I can't think of a single top player who isn't their national no 1.'

Well, there only 3 players every win anything, plus, occasionally Murray, so if you're restricting your definition of 'top player' to them, it's hardly surprising.

Anyone care to predict who will be in the frame for spoty next year?.

Golf majors, tennis majors, world athletics championship, TdF [ chance of a third win for Froome ], F1 [ all about the car ] etc.

Marston, that's moving the goalposts from the original post in that Surf can't think of a single top player who isn't their national no 1, Top player in that you'd expect them to give Murray, Djokovic etc a really tough game.he didn't specify in the majors?

Marston Hammer 2:46 Tue Dec 20
Re: SPOTY
Yep, fair enough, although can't imagine he's got a very good record against the big 4, especially in the majors.

'Probably makes sense only talking about sports you know about surface.

All the top players enter the Olympics (or at least their countries no 1)'

Probably makes sense only to talk in a language you understand mate. The idea that the no.2's in most top tennis playing nations are not among the top players in the world and better players than Malawi's no.1 is plain silly. Plus, as you admit, half the no.1s weren't there due to injury. Plus they have only had one golf tournament since 1900 or something. Doubtless Faldo would have beaten one American and Sevy a couple of times.

golf cant compare to the athletes of tennis, tom Watson came 2nd in the British open at the age of sixty for gods sake. he was an old boy pottering around and nearly won the premier tournament.
